Lives Changed - Linda and Julie
Linda and Julie

Linda and Julie have been together for a few years now but each day brings new joy and new challenges for their advocacy relationship.

When Linda met Julie several years ago Julie was looking for a friend that could help her deal with the changes in her life. Julie's brother and sisters had left home and Julie found herself alone oftentimes. She would fill her time playing records and watching TV. Her Mom would take her to Special Olympics activities but there was a growing gap of need in Julie's life. That's when her Mom contacted Citizen Advocacy.

Julie wanted to do more things outside of the home that would get her outside, involved in new experiences. We matched her with Linda. Linda like to camp, fish and garden. And, Julie showed an interest in doing these things as well. It was a good match. Julie would continue to do Special Olympics and live with her Mom but now she had Linda as well. Linda and Julie have spent many hours together over the last few years gardening, fishing and doing other fun things as well; including baking and sleepovers.

Linda has challenged Julie to expand her world outside of the home while retaining her relationship with developmentally disabled friends. And Julie has challenged Linda as well. Since Julie is hard of hearing, Linda has had to adapt her style of speaking to meet Julies needs. And, that's what advocacy is all about: a two-way street where both advocate and partner partake, learn and grow.
